Living this dream started one late evening, while viewing properties on-line. You pictured living in Portland but somehow, the images didn’t quite mesh with your vision. Then you got auto updates and started talking with a Realtor. After chatting about your lifestyle, she suggested opening up your search. When the home at 22 Knight Street popped up in your in box, you couldn’t believe it. It was located in one of your top pick towns based on your criteria of lifestyle, school systems, proximity to Portland and it fit the budget. Plus, it looked gorgeous. It was just the right size with a finished family room in the basement, located at the end of a cul-de sac, surrounded by simple yet refined landscaping and an oversize garage. You knew the photographs were professionally captured, so you hoped it was as good as you imagined when you saw it in person. You called your Realtor; this was too good to be true, a property not to miss. Everyone agreed. You immediately put in an offer. After a bit of negotiating, it was yours. Each day you discover something more that you love about your new home and life.
As you turn onto Rte. 88 the Portland Country Club is first to greet you. Founded in 1895, the club boasts an 18 hole Donald Ross course as well as casual and formal facilities, swimming and tennis. Proceeding onward, you drive by the Pine Grove Pre-School, the gorgeous stone church with wrought iron gate hinges and then Skillins Greenhouse. Continue down the dip in the road where Mill Creek rushes into Mussell Cove. Each day this narrow estuary is different based on the tides and whether the lobster traps are out in the ocean or on the floats. Stately homes along the route offer an ever changing scene – renovations, landscaping and welcoming facades. You note that very few of them have their windows shaded, you can see inside as the inhabitants live their lives. Your new favorite restaurant is Dockside. Walking there is an option if everyone was more open to that – it’s just across the street at Handy Boat. You love that the bartender, Keith, knows your favorite drink, and besides that, who doesn’t love an open air restaurant on the water? This year you may get a boat, you live too close to the ocean not to. There are so many options. You promise to research membership at the Portland Yacht Club, they offer racing and sailing programs as well as membership benefits. You heard it was one of the oldest yacht clubs in New England and want to know more. And, now that the Town Landing Market offers breakfast sandwiches along with all of the other options (fresh lobster anyone? Native ice cubes…!), you can hardly stand it.
With a soft exhale, you drive down to the end of Knight Street, waving at your neighbors along the way. When the greeting committee runs down the winding drive, your smile broadens. Since you are heading out again, you leave the car out and enter your home via the way it was meant to be, crossing the threshold through the front door. The soaring entryway and sweeping staircase draw you in. You were told the prior owner replaced an outdated light fixture with the current pendant chandelier when they purchased the home and you chuckle, knowing you would have chosen the exact same one. You look forward to entertaining guests in the cathedraled living room and curling up to the wood fire with a good book. You cannot wait to create lasting memories around the dining room table. Everyone follows you inside and gathers around the expansive kitchen island, all talking at once – the informal family room in the background. You smile in the din of excitement. After a quick glass of water, you run upstairs to change. Passing each bedroom, and your in-home office you nod approvingly. At the end of the hallway, your master bedroom and bathroom, full of sunshine, offer more than just a place to rest your head at the end of a long day. The soaking tub and double sinks in the cathedraled bathroom are just perfect. You appreciate that backing up to the woods and the Falmouth Nature Preserve means that you don’t have to block the sunlight with window treatments.
The evening beckons and everyone is waiting for you downstairs. The vote is to convene at the Dockside and enjoy dinner as the sun starts to set. You look forward to a toast with your friends and you will make that toast being both inwardly and outwardly grateful that you have truly found home.
